Classic and advanced chiropractic

The founder of the chiropractic profession was Daniel D Palmer who in 1895 adjusted a janitor and cured his deafness. Since that time doctors of chiropractic have become the third largest primary care profession in the world.

Chiropractors attend university for 5 years and to gain registration in Sweden there is an additional one year of training in the Swedish health care system The closest chiropractic education establishment is at the University of Odense in Denmark.

Within chiropractic the classical method of manual adjustment is used, where by the spine and nervous systems are affected. In addition instruments of various kinds can be used.

Advanced chiropractic encompasses many post graduate hours of training done abroad. Some of these diagnostic and treatment technique are: applied kinesiology (where acupuncture and reflex techniques are included). Other techniques used by chiropractors are sacro–occipital technique, cranio-sacral technique, nutrition and homeopathy. Some of us are also specialists in, for instance, paediatrics, neurology, and imaging technique.

Examination

Examination follows the usual pattern used by all primary healthcare practitioners:

  • The case history which includes all relevant information from childhood to adulthood. Questions asked for can be about accidents, illness, surgical and drug treatments. The social history is just as important for instants work, family stressors, physical demanding work etc. Then follows questions about the various systems in the body such as the digestive system, hormonal system and immunity.
  • Then usually follows a physical examination where reflexes and blood pressure are taken. We may listen to your heart and palpate your abdomen.
  • Lastly the specialist chiropractic examination where posture, ability to move, tenderness etc. are assessed. After this, an examination of the spine and cranium/jaw joint and other joints are made. Neurological examination is done as the same time, such as reflexes sensations balance and muscle tests.

Report
At a later date we meet again for the report of findings, where we will present to you our assessment and diagnoses of your complaints. A treatment plan is agreed upon and a rehabilitation plan is put forward. In case we discover a problem that falls out with our scope of practise you will be referred to another health care practitioner. We may also ask for additional tests and x-ray to be made before commencing treatment.
