In 2001, the SBU (Swedish council on technology assessment in health) published a report on acute back and neck pain which looked at studies undertaken since 1989. In this study it was noted that chiropractic research has developed greatly in the last 10 years, and from the high standard of research therein it was found that ‘chiropractic and the methods of treatment used by chiropractors is very effective at easing pain originating from the back’. This study can be found at www.SBU.se and is called ‘ont i ryggen, ont i nacken’. An Australian report published by the Australian Acute Muskuloskeletal Pain Guidelines Group (2003) it was established that with acute problems, manipulative treatment offers the best care. The report can be found at www.nhmrc.gov.au. ‘The Manga Study’ undertaken in 1998 focused on a means at reducing national health care costs and found that manipulative treatment (notably chiropractic) has a higher efficiency rate at reducing sick leave costs due to musculoskeletal problems than traditional medicine. This is an important fact to consider when at the time in the place of study (Ontario, Canada), musculoskeletal problems were ranked first as a reason for consultation with a health professional, and ranked second as a reason for the use of prescription and non-prescription drugs.
